“I don’t feel good about this.” Sara clutched Jed’s hand.

“I know my way around a whiteout. I’ll be fine.”

The storm had been sudden and unexpected, sweeping through the valley and trapping them in their homestead. The food was nearly gone.

“Be careful.” Sara kissed him. She watched from the cabin window as he mounted the horse and disappeared into the snow.

Sara waited two weeks. Jed was ten days late, and she was frantic with worry. Then she heard a neighing outside the door. She flung it open, eager to see Jed.

The horse had come back alone.
